Remote and isolated, forbidding and enchanting, timeless and magical, ethereal and awesome. The Land Of lamas. Land of High Passes. It is a magical land, completely different from the green landscape of many other parts of the Himalayas. It is nature at an extreme. A land of freezing winds and burning hot sunlight, Ladakh is a cold desert lying in the rain shadow of the Great Himalayas and other smaller ranges. Little rain and snow reaches this dry area, where natural forces have created a fantastic landscape.
Best Season: Mid-April to September.

This remote Himalayan Shangri La is India's highest inhabited region with a sparse population, predominantly Buddhist. With altitudes ranging from about 9,000-ft (2750m) at Kargil to 25,000-ft (7672m) at Saser Kangri in the Karakoram, Ladakh is a high altitude desert, which receives scant rainfall. It is bounded by two of the mightiest mountain ranges, the Great Himalaya and the Karakoram, atop two others, the Ladakh range and the Zanskar range.
