Kumbha Ujjain 2004

Snan or Ritual Bath, Simhastha Ujjain
Romola Butalia writes about the ritual bath or snan at the Simhastha at Ujjain with details about the auspicious bathing dates.

Simhastha is the great bathing festival at Ujjain, celebrated every 12 years. Ceremonial bathing in the holy waters of Shipra begins in the month of Chaitra on the day of the full moon. It continues at different intervals through the successive month of Vaishakh culminating on the full moon day. The first bathing date at the Simhastha is on 05 April 2004 and ends with the shahi snan on 05 May 2004. The District Magistrate has declared the Mela period from March 21 to May 19, 2004. While the entire period is considered auspicious, there are five main bathing dates.

The Simhastha is much more significant than a ritualistic dip in the holy river. It is a tribute to the Hindu way of life, an affirmation of faith and a renewal of our deep-seated beliefs. holy bath at a Kumbha is said to be equal in merit to thousands of snans during the month of Kartik, hundreds of Magh snans and crore snan in the river Narmada during Vaishakh. It's fruit is said to be equivalent to thousands of Ashwamegh Yajna, Hundreds Vajpaye Yajna, and lakhs of parikrama around the world.

The celebration of the Simahastha at Ujjain is calculated based on ten different factors. It is celebrated in a cycle of twelve years when Jupiter enters the Leo sign of the zodiac, known as Simha Rashi. The combination of 10 Punyaprad Yog that are required is:
  • Avaantika Nagari
  • Vaishakh Mas
  • Shukla Paksh
  • Jupiter in Simha Rashi
  • Sun in Mesh Rashi
  • Moon in Tula Rashi
  • Swati Nakshatra
  • Purnima Tithi
  • Vyati Pat Yog
  • Somvar (Monday)
  • While most of these yog ( conjunctions) occur every year, Jupiter in Leo occurs once every 12 years.
