Goa: A Kaleidoscope of Images
Girish Menon , photo-journalist, is fascinated by what he sees in his travels to different destinations. It is as important for him to catch the myriad images as they are to convey in words what they mean to him.

Goa is easily my favourite holiday destination. I usually spend most of my time in north Goa - places like Baga, Anjuna and Vagator. These places have maximum activity, yet it's extremely relaxing.

The flea market that converges at Anjuna on Wednesdays is well-known. Increasingly, Baga has an equally active market every Saturday evening between the months of September and April. Apart from the stalls at Baga there are great bars and the food is sumptuous, the live music is peppy. Goa is a musically inclined state with the youth frequently forming their own bands, be it rock, pop or jazz. Apart from local bands, western tourists also frequently perform.

The shacks along Baga beach are ideal places to chill out. One of the salient features of this state is its food and the sea food is superb. The local vindaloo masala (spices) is favourite of mine.

The churches of old Goa take you centuries back in time. Most roads in Goa are narrow with greenery on either side. A typical Goan road has coconut trees, and a village ambience, where you can expect a herd of cattle to cross the road before you. There are plenty of adventure sports activities around the beaches of Goa, especially Baga. These include para-sailing, paragliding, bungee junping and scuba diving. Sometimes you see an unusual sight, like the picture of tribals from Andhra Pradesh with their colourfully decorated cow at Anjuna.

Last but not the least … this photograph was shot whilst I was up in the sky para- sailing with the Arabian Sea beneath my feet. This photograph is particularly dear to me. I almost died twice in a matter of three minutes … (bike accidents). Surviving them, I realised that I was invincible on that day. That is why I dared to take my camera with me up on the Parashoot. Nothing could go wrong that day. It is certainly the most memorable day of my life.
