Orissa: Wildlife

40% of Orissa is covered by forests and there is a profusion of wildlife. Tigers are seen in the dense forests and hilly regions. Leopards and wolves are found in almost all districts. Elephant, bear, deer, sambar, black buck and boar are found. Indigenous quail, hare and black partridges are found in scrub jungles. Fowls and wild ducks are commonly seen. Crocodiles and alligators frequent the rivers and creeks.

Nandankanan
'The Garden of the Gods 'is a beautiful biological park 20 km from Bhubaneshwar. Set amidst the heart of nature, it covers a vast expanse of the Chandaka forest where natural flora and fauna flourish in their natural habitat and environment. The first captive gharial breeding centre is here. The zoo at Nandankanan is internationally known for its white tigers. The lion safari, nocturnal animal house and reptile-park are worth visiting.

Chilika Lake
Asia's largest salt water lake, this is an ideal habitat for aquatic animals. It provides a rare treat for bird watchers, particularly in winter, when migratory birds fly in from as far away as Siberia. The bird life includes Siberian cranes, flamingos from the Persian Gulf, pelicans from Western India, cormorants, white bellied sea eagles, kites, darters, sea gulls, teals and white ibis.

Bhittarkanika
Situated near Bhubaneshwar, it is an adventurer's paradise and breeding ground for Olive Ridley turtles. Also home to estuarine crocodiles.

Ampani
The whole area, including the Halidagundi valley, abounds in spotted deer, sambar and black panthers. Located in Kalahandi.

Karipat
The tiger, sambar, leopard, gaur and chital abound in the forest areas. Located in Kalahandi.

Simipal
Covering an area 2750 sq km, this National Park has been selected as one of the nine tiger projects in India. Located in Mayurbhanj.
